St. Martin’s Church, Aldringen

St. Martin's Church, Aldringen, font

‘The Triumph of Christianity over Paganism’, the Belgian version of the fresco by Tommaso Laureti in the Hall of Constantine in the Palace of the Vatican – this is what the baptismal font in the Church of Aldringen actually represents. It was made of arkose in the 12th century and was placed on a truncated Roman column from the 2nd century that had presumably held a statue of a pagan deity in the past. It is assumed that the church itself had once been a heathen sanctuary too.
